ART21 Response
Art 21
Julie Mehretu's Politicized Landscapes
Two words to desire the artist's work:
Language: throughout the video, Mehretu brought up the topic of how we as a society lack the ability express how we truly feel. The mere fact that the viewer of the work is unable to "grasp" the piece as a whole emphasizes this feat. Art has the ability to express ourselves "when language isn't enough." There's a hidden method of communication behind her work. We must be brave enough to determine its intent.
Discomfort: The abstract/confusion of the landscape inevitable yields an unsettling sensation. Not being able to focus on one element contributes to the chaos of the human psyche. We constantly have communication disconnects. Again, Mehretu brings this to light with varying shapes and line work. The "mess" reflects the chaos going on within the human mind, and in turn society as a whole.
Two artworks:
In relation to the elements/principles, Epigraph Damascus manipulates line. I know it's hard to see, but when you look really close to the piece, there's thousands of line marks that, when arranged like this create a dark overtone. The lines also have differing stroke weights which contribute to this feat.
Of other Planes of there
Once again, line is utilized but this time there is color involved. The two aspects together effectively create unity. The value scale of the colors make it appear that there is almost a spotlight illuminating the page. Nonetheless, establishing a focal point towards the center of the piece.

A Few of My Favorite Things
A Few of My Favorite Things
- Macbook. I am a graphic design major & use the adobe suite pretty often, also I love everything Apple.
- Coach Perfume. I absolutely love the scent, and my mom also got it for me as a gift so it reminds me of her.
- AirPods. These let me escape and be able to unwind. They’re also what I use whenever I work out - helps me focus.
- Moleskin Journal. Years ago, my brother got me a Moleskine journal for Christmas and ever since then I have been journaling.
- Vinyl Record. Hollywood's Bleeding is one of my favorite albums of all time, the song Circles, is one I play on repeat
- Pear Necklace. This again was a gift from my mom but it's also my favorite necklace. I love the design of it.
- The book, The Stranger. I read this book in high school and parts of it still resonate with me today. I also find the cover interesting from a design standpoint.
